Both Dota 2 and League of Legends are MOBAs (multiplayer online battle arenas), insanely popular online strategy games (and top-tier esports titles) that sprung from the Defense of the Ancients mod for Warcraft III. Riot Games also announced this week that its take on Auto Chess, Teamfight Tactics, would release later this month. Its currently in open beta on Android, iOS, and PC. The game, which is Valves take on the Dota Auto Chess mod for Dota 2, is going to stay in Early Access. Underlords is based on a fan mod of Dota 2 which rose in popularity earlier this year called Auto Chess. Just a week after a full unveil, Dota Underlords is now available on Android, iOS, and PC. Drodo released a mobile version of Auto Chess in May. Dota Underlords is now available in open beta on Steam as well as on iOS and Android devices. It offers a dizzying amount of tactics and strategy, and it’s much slower than Dota 2. It takes the units from Dota 2 and turns them into pieces that fight on a chessboard-like field, and up to eight people can play. It became a sensation, gaining millions of downloads and grabbing streamers’ attention on Twitch. Sensor Tower also estimates it has three times the installs of the next auto chess-like, Arena of Evolution: Red Tides from Hero Entertainment.ĭrodo released the Auto Chess mod for Dota 2 on PC in January. This doesn’t count installs from third-party Android stores in China. After releasing to record numbers (for a Valve game) last Thursday, it’s already surpassed gaming giants in terms of popularity.
